Synopsis

ASTRO Project: A.Si.A (아스트로 프로젝트: 아.시.아) is a five-episode reality show about the boy group ASTRO, made for MBC Music. It aired on Thursdays at 7 p.m. from 10 November to 8 December 2016, with repeats on MBC every1, and follows the group's first showcases abroad, in Tokyo and Jakarta.

The group had debuted under Fantagio that February, and this was its first reality series after the debut; the earlier OK! Ready had followed the members before their debut. All six members of the time are in it: JinJin, MJ, Cha Eun Woo, Moon Bin, Rocky and Yoon San-ha. The autumn it covers was a busy one. The third mini album, Autumn Story, came out with the title track Confession on 10 November, the day of the first broadcast. Cine21's programme listing describes the series as a record of six young men trying to grow into world-class artists, and credits PD Park Sang-min as director.

Japan comes first. In Tokyo the group played its first showcase outside Korea to about 3,000 fans, and the second episode shows two members sneaking out without their managers. Indonesia follows in the fourth episode, built around the Jakarta showcase, after which related hashtags reached first place on social media, according to Tenasia. The fifth and last episode, on 8 December, stays away from the stage and shows the group resting between performances.

Press coverage gives a description for episodes 2, 4 and 5 only. Episodes 1 and 3 appear in broadcast schedules, but no published summary of them was found, so they have no line in the episode list.

Why it still gets watched

Fans come back to it for the line-up more than the format: it shows all six members together in their first year, including Moon Bin, who died in April 2023. It also catches them before the overseas tours became routine, when a showcase in Tokyo was still a first.

Themes and messages

The series is about what a rookie group does to be ready for fans abroad. The members learn greetings and songs in the local language, and in both Tokyo and Jakarta they added local songs to their set as a present for the audience alongside their own tracks (Tenasia, 17 November and 1 December 2016). In Jakarta they also took video calls with fans.

Interesting facts

  • Times tables in Japanese. At the Tokyo showcase Cha Eun Woo recited the six and nine times tables in Japanese, which Tenasia (17 November 2016) tied to his nickname Cha-pago.
  • A disguised leader. In Jakarta JinJin dressed up so that fans would not recognise him and sat among them for a hidden-camera prank (Tenasia, 1 December 2016).
  • A police escort. Talking to Tenasia for an interview published on 27 November 2016, the members said they had been given a police escort at Jakarta's airport.
