Synopsis
Master in the House (집사부일체, also known as All the Butlers) is an SBS Sunday reality show. A fixed group of entertainers moves in with someone who is at the top of a field, called the Master, and spends two days and a night living by that person's routine. Some weeks a Master is visited for a single day instead.
Producer Lee Se-young told reporters in March 2018 that he wanted viewers to see how a Master thinks and lives and then make up their own minds about it. The first episode went out on 31 December 2017. The first season closed on 18 September 2022 after 238 episodes, and after a break a shorter second run of 16 episodes followed from 1 January to 23 April 2023, for 254 in total. Lee Seung-gi and Yang Se-hyung were there from the start, with actor Lee Sang-yoon and BtoB's Yook Sung-jae; those two left after episode 111, broadcast on 15 March 2020. Lee Seung-gi did not come back for the second season, which brought in the baseball player Lee Dae-ho and GOT7's BamBam. Most visits run over two episodes.
Cha Eun Woo of ASTRO first appeared, together with the mixed martial artist Kim Dong-hyun, in episode 116 on 19 April 2020. That was the opening half of a special in which the cast spent a day inside SBS, reading the news and working as junior producers. The pair were welcomed as fixed members on the broadcast of 3 May 2020. Over the next 14 months his Masters included the volleyball player Kim Yeon-koung, the pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin, the actress Kim Hee-sun, the singer Kim Jong-kook and, for one episode, the palace of Gyeongbokgung itself. His final broadcast was episode 177 on 20 June 2021, the second half of a visit to the folk singer Lee Jang-hee.
Why it still gets watched
Most people looking the show up now want one stretch of it: the 62 episodes from April 2020 to June 2021 with Cha Eun Woo in the cast, summarised one by one in the episode list below. The format also ages well because each visit stands alone; a viewer can start from any Master they already know without needing the episodes around it.
Master in the House cast
Themes and messages
Every Master is chosen for doing one thing very well, and the cast's job is to copy that person's daily routine rather than interview them. The list covers sport (Park Ji-sung, Ryu Hyun-jin, Kim Yeon-koung), film and television (Youn Yuh-jung, Lee Soon-jae), music (BoA, Park Jin-young), business (Namgoong Hoon of Kakao Games, John Lee of Meritz Asset Management) and religion (the monk Pomnyun).
In September and October 2021 it went into politics: Yoon Suk Yeol, Lee Jae-myung and Lee Nak-yon appeared as Masters in three consecutive weeks (episodes 187 to 189) ahead of the 2022 presidential election.
Interesting facts
- Cha's first line as a member. Asked on the broadcast of 3 May 2020 what would change with him and Kim Dong-hyun in the cast, he said the average age would go down and the average intelligence would go up.
- Recruiting their own Masters. In the episode of 26 April 2020 the members, working as rookie SBS producers, phoned celebrities to ask them on. Shin Sung-rok was turned down by Han Ji-min, Kim Dong-hyun got Ma Dong-seok to say he was open to it, and Lee Seung-gi reached only Bong Joon-ho's voicemail.
- A member as the Master. Episode 146 (15 November 2020) made Lee Seung-gi, a cast member since 2017, the Master of the week.
- A letter for 2041. On Cha's and Shin Sung-rok's last trip the members wrote letters for a time capsule and agreed to meet again in 2041 (Marie Claire Korea, 21 June 2021).
