Synopsis
Sergeant First Class Lim Gyu-nam serves near the Demilitarized Zone dividing North and South Korea, quietly preparing a route out of the country he no longer believes in. Before he can act, his plan is discovered by Major Lee Hyun-sang, a State Security Department officer who once knew him as a boy. Rather than reporting him, Hyun-sang has Gyu-nam praised in public for supposedly stopping a deserter, a promotion that buys the soldier time but pulls him deeper into the system he is trying to leave.
When a comrade, Kim Dong-hyuk, is caught trying to cross the border alone, Gyu-nam is forced to move before he is ready. The two men set out together through minefields and patrol lines, with Hyun-sang, now certain of the betrayal, leading the pursuit himself. What began as a private escape turns into an extended chase across frozen terrain and checkpoints toward the border, as loyalty, guilt and self-preservation collide among men who grew up in the same unit.
The film follows Gyu-nam past the border and into a new life in South Korea. A year later, still adjusting to freedom, he tracks down the family of a soldier who did not survive the crossing and delivers a keepsake that was never meant to leave the North. Escape closes not on the moment of arrival but on what Gyu-nam still owes to the men who did not make it out with him.
