Heartbreak Library

Heartbreak Library follows Eun-soo, a librarian in a small Korean seaside town who catches a strange visitor tearing pages out of her books. The man, Joon-oh, is chasing a message his ex-girlfriend hid before disappearing, and Eun-soo's decision to help him turns into her own path back from heartbreak.

Joon-oh visits the library nearly every afternoon and rips a single page from every book he can reach. Eun-soo first assumes he is simply defacing library property and reports the damage, but she keeps noticing that the torn page is always the same number: 198. When she finally confronts him, he explains that his girlfriend left without warning and without an address, leaving only a note that read, "Look up page 198," never saying which book.

Eun-soo has just gone through her own breakup, and at first she tells Joon-oh to stop chasing someone who clearly wanted to leave. Curiosity wins out anyway: checking the library's borrowing records, she finds that his ex-girlfriend checked out 956 books before she vanished, and the two start working through them together, one page 198 at a time.

The film is based on a short story by novelist Yoon Sung-hee, a recommended entry for the 27th Yi Sang Literary Award, and keeps its slow, unhurried pace even as it expands into a feature. Its tone stays light and romantic, built around how people carry old memories rather than around where the search for page 198 finally leads.

Heartbreak Library still finds viewers because it remains available with English subtitles on platforms like Netflix, and Korean-language film blogs and discussion boards were still posting new reviews and reactions to it in 2025 and 2026, close to two decades after its original release.
