John Arcilla

Romeo John Gonzales Arcilla was born on June 24, 1966, in Manila and, after martial law was declared in 1972, moved with his family to his mother's hometown of Baler, Aurora. He graduated from Saint Joseph's College of Quezon City in 1986 and trained under stage director Tony Mabesa before becoming a resident actor of the Tanghalang Pilipino Actor Company, the Cultural Center of the Philippines' resident theatre troupe, from 1991 to 1997, where he took lead roles in Ryan Cayabyab's Rizal musical trilogy. A 1994 television commercial for Pure Foods, built around the line "Coffee na lang, dear," led to wider casting opportunities in narrative television.

Arcilla had a supporting cameo as a security guard in The Bourne Legacy (2012) and appeared in Metro Manila (2013), the British entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards. In 2015 he portrayed General Antonio Luna in Heneral Luna, at the time reported as the highest-grossing Filipino historical film. From 2017 to 2022 he played the antagonist Renato "Buwitre" Hipolito on the long-running series FPJ's Ang Probinsyano. For his role as a hitman in On the Job: The Missing 8 (2021), Arcilla won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice International Film Festival, becoming the first Filipino and the first Southeast Asian actor to receive the award; he followed it with the Best Actor prize at the 2022 Gawad Urian Awards for the same performance.

He continued to work across film, television and theatre through the mid-2020s, playing Carlos Fiero in the series Dirty Linen (2023), joining the cast of Pamilya Sagrado (2024) and hosting the TV5 game show SpinGo from 2023. Arcilla unsuccessfully ran for city councilor in Parañaque's first district in 2010.
