Synopsis
Law of the Jungle sent a group of Korean entertainers somewhere remote and left them to get by on very little. The comedian Kim Byung Man led it, and his name is in the Korean title. The rest of the cast changed from one destination to the next, and each trip ran over several weekly episodes: building a shelter on the first day, finding drinking water, catching and cooking whatever the place offered, and dealing with weather nobody had planned for. The comedy came from celebrities who were plainly out of their depth; the tension came from the parts that were not a joke.
It ran on SBS from 2011 to 2021, and the destinations ranged across Pacific islands, jungle interiors and far-flung coasts. Because the cast rotated, most actors and idols who appeared on it did so for a single trip, which is how it is usually listed in a filmography: by the destination rather than by the series.
Seo Kang Joon's trip was Tonga, the show's twenty-fourth destination. He left with the advance team on 31 January 2016, straight after Cheese in the Trap wrapped, and stayed for about two weeks. His episodes are 203 to 207, broadcast on Fridays from 4 March to 1 April 2016; the second half of the Tonga run, episodes 208 to 211, swapped in a different group. The expedition was knocked off course by Cyclone Winston. On camera he admitted to a severe fear of insects, and after walking into a swarm of cockroaches inside a wrecked ship he said he had thought his nerve was stronger than it was. He called the trip an experience money could not buy.
Why it still gets watched
Most people arriving at this record want one specific fortnight of it: Tonga, early 2016, five episodes. Seo Kang Joon had just finished Cheese in the Trap, the drama that made him properly famous, and went straight from that to a Pacific island with three survival tools and no way of pretending to be anything. The version of him on screen there is the one his audience did not have: sunburnt, out of his depth, and honest about it.
The cockroach sequence is the reason the run is still linked and reposted. He had already said on camera that his fear of insects was severe, then walked into a swarm of them inside a wrecked ship and came out saying his nerve had turned out to be weaker than he had thought. Nothing in a scripted role gets you that.
Beyond the one trip, the show is worth knowing because of how many Korean careers passed through it. A decade of SBS Fridays, a rotating cast, and a format that reliably showed people a side of themselves they could not rehearse. That is why a Law of the Jungle credit turns up in so many filmographies, and why it is almost always listed by destination rather than by episode number.

Filming locations
Each run was shot at the destination in its title. The overseas runs, by the year they started airing: Namibia and Papua (2011); Vanuatu, Siberia, Madagascar, and the Amazon and Galapagos (2012); New Zealand, the Himalayas, the Caribbean and Maya jungle, the savannah and Micronesia (2013); Borneo, Brazil, the Indian Ocean, the Solomon Islands and Costa Rica (2014); Palau, Indochina, Yap, Brunei, Nicaragua and Samoa (2015); Panama, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Mongolia and East Timor (2016); Manado, Sumatra, New Zealand again, Komodo, Fiji and the Cook Islands (2017); Patagonia, Antarctica, Mexico, Sabah, the Indian Ocean again and the Northern Mariana Islands (2018); Chatham and Tasman, the Lost Jungle and Island run, Myanmar and Mergui, the Sunda Islands, and Chuuk and Pohnpei (2019). The last overseas run, which included Coron, aired from February to June 2020.
From August 2020 every run was filmed in Korea, among them the Ulleungdo and Dokdo run that aired from December 2020 to January 2021.
Themes and messages
Competence is not transferable. The show's engine is the gap between what a famous person is good at and what a beach at low tide requires. Fame buys nothing on the reef. The running joke is always the same joke, and it works for ten years because the humiliation is real and briefly total.
Kim Byung Man is the format. This was never a licensed international property; it was built around one comedian, whose own physical skill and willingness to be the one who actually catches the fish anchors every trip. When the show could no longer travel, that anchor had nothing to hold, which is a large part of why the domestic version did not work.
Where the line sits. A programme that drops entertainers into real weather and real water has to keep deciding how much of the discomfort is the point. Cyclone Winston made that concrete: the strongest South Pacific storm on record arrived mid-shoot and the production turned three days of being stranded into an episode. It is the format working as designed and also the moment at which it is fair to ask what the design is.
What the edit chooses to show. The Tonga run drew criticism in Korea for cutting the episodes around one cast member while the veterans barely appeared, and the ratings rose while the complaints ran. A survival show still has to be television, and those two jobs pull in different directions more often than the format admits.
Interesting facts
- A cyclone stranded the Tonga crew for three days. Cyclone Winston, the strongest South Pacific storm on record, hit while they were filming in the Vava'u islands. Seo Kang Joon and Seolhyun had already flown home on 15 February 2016 for other commitments; Kim Byung Man, Go Se Won, Lee Hoon, 2PM's Chansung and Infinite's Sungjong were stuck with the crew for about seventy-two hours, including a full day at the airport. They flew out on 18 February and SBS folded the wait into the show as a survival story of its own.
- It was never a licensed format. It was built around Kim Byung Man personally, and the rule was that the group had to find its own food, water and shelter with three survival tools each.
- Seo Kang Joon said on camera that he has a severe fear of insects, then walked into a swarm of cockroaches inside a wrecked ship and admitted his nerve was not what he thought.
- Jota was cut by a knife opening a coconut, in the episode broadcast on 25 March 2016.
- The Tonga run drew a backlash over its editing. Critics accused SBS of cutting the episodes almost entirely around Seolhyun while Kim Byung Man and the veterans barely appeared. The ratings went up anyway.
- COVID ended it. Overseas filming stopped in May 2020, the show came back with Korean locations in August, and that version could not carry it. The last episode went out on 29 May 2021.

| 380 | Three cast members searched the forest near camp for food through heavy rain and spoiled fruit, pushing into harder terrain as night fell, with a younger member stepping up to lead the group. Elsewhere another cast member explored near a waterfall and took a leading role among the newer members. | 2019-09-07 | Aired | |

| Kim Byung-man led a nighttime ocean hunt so each member could have an abalone, and caught something rare along the way while In-ah watched anxiously from the shore. The group also slept for the first time in a cliff-side shelter built to sleep several people to the sound of the waves, alongside a water-yoga session on a wooden raft, a hand-built well hose and a bottle-fishing attempt. | Date TBC |

Frequently asked questions
What is Law of the Jungle about?
The comedian Kim Byung Man led a rotating group of Korean entertainers into somewhere remote and they had to get by on very little: build a shelter, find drinking water, catch and cook their own food. Each destination ran over several weekly episodes.
How many episodes does Law of the Jungle have?
452, broadcast on SBS from 21 October 2011 to 29 May 2021.
Which episodes is Seo Kang Joon in?
Episodes 203 to 207, the first half of the Tonga expedition, broadcast on Fridays from 4 March to 1 April 2016. He flew out with the advance team on 31 January and stayed about two weeks.
Who else went to Tonga?
The first half was Kim Byung Man, Go Se Won, Seo Kang Joon, Jeon Hye Bin, Hong Yoon Hwa, Mad Town's Jota and B1A4's Sandeul. The second half, episodes 208 to 211, swapped in Lee Hoon, 2PM's Chansung, Infinite's Sungjong and AOA's Seolhyun.
What happened with the cyclone?
Cyclone Winston hit the Vava'u islands during filming. Seo Kang Joon and Seolhyun had already left on 15 February 2016. The rest of the group and the crew were grounded for about seventy-two hours and got out on 18 February.
Why did Law of the Jungle end?
Overseas filming became impossible during the pandemic. SBS paused it in May 2020, restarted with Korean locations in August, and closed it on 29 May 2021 when the variants ended any hope of going abroad again.
Where can I watch Law of the Jungle?
On SBS's own video service and Wavve in Korea, and on Kocowa outside it. Netflix Korea carries selected runs but not the whole series. SBS also has a dedicated clip channel on YouTube.
Did Seo Kang Joon win anything for the Tonga run?
He was nominated, not a winner. At the 2016 SBS Entertainment Awards he and Jota were up for Best Couple and did not take it. Seolhyun won Best Entertainer for the same Tonga run.
Is Law of the Jungle scripted?
Not in the sense of written dialogue. The group really does have to build shelter and find food, with three survival tools each and no supplied provisions, and the weather is whatever the weather is. What is shaped is the edit: which people an episode follows, the order events appear in, and how much of the waiting is left in. The Tonga run was criticised in Korea on exactly that point.
Which Law of the Jungle destination should I start with?
By whoever you came for, which is how the show is normally catalogued. Each destination is self-contained and needs no knowledge of the runs before it, so a Tonga viewer starting at episode 203 loses nothing. There is no continuing story to miss.
