Midnight Diner
Synopsis
A small Shinjuku diner opens at midnight and closes at seven, and the Master cooks whatever a customer asks for as long as he has the ingredients. Each episode belongs to one dish and one regular, and the food is how the story gets told rather than a decoration around it.
Adapted from Yaro Abe's manga Shin'ya Shokudo, the series is anchored by Kaoru Kobayashi as the quiet, scar-faced Master, with directors including Joji Matsuoka rotating through a cast of recurring customers whose own storylines unfold in the booths of his diner.
Midnight Diner ran for three ten-episode seasons on Japanese television between 2009 and 2014, after which Netflix picked up the franchise for two further seasons, Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories, introducing the show to a much wider international audience.
