Synopsis
Ji Yeon Woo stopped believing in love a long time ago. She is tough and practical because she has to be. Her stepfather keeps causing trouble, her mother died of Wilson's disease, and the bakery her parents left her is about to be seized over debts. Her own father, Ji Dong Man, was murdered, and the killer was never caught.
Kim Min Ho, her childhood friend, left Jeju for Seoul only to stay near her. He is now a rookie traffic officer who still hopes to find the man who killed her father. Then Yeon Woo pulls a stranger off the subway tracks. He is Jung Eun Sup, a pastry chef who made his name in France and came back to stop Lee Soo Ah, the woman he trained with there, from marrying someone else. He has nowhere to go, so he moves in, and the three of them end up under one roof. Eun Sup gets Yeon Woo work as an assistant at Soo Ah's bakery.
What Yeon Woo does not know is that Eun Sup's father, Jung Seung Beom, head of a national bakery chain and about to enter politics, is the suspect in her father's murder. As a boy Eun Sup saw his father with his hands around a man's throat, and his mother took him to France. Detective Nam has chased Seung Beom for years for his own reason: his pregnant wife ate bread made with polluted groundwater at Seung Beom's company, and their son was born with the illness that killed him.
SBS aired the Rays of Sunshine Korean drama, also listed as Shining Days, in 16 episodes on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 February to 1 April 2004. Kim Jong Hyuk directed a script by Jo Jung Hwa, and Kim Jong Hak Production made it. It opened at 19.3 percent and never passed 20 percent, and her rough, hard-edged heroine drew criticism of Song Hye Kyo's acting at the time.
Why it still gets watched
It was the drama Song Hye Kyo chose right after All In. For Ryu Seung Bum it was also a goodbye to television for a long time: after this he made only a cameo in MBC's Pasta in 2010 before returning with Moving in 2023, 19 years later. He once explained that he could not use language freely on TV.

Family without blood ties. SBS said it wanted to show a new kind of family built through forgiveness and understanding rather than blood.
Room for other people. The planning notes argue that the deeper problem behind broken homes is that people no longer keep a place in their hearts for others.

Interesting facts
The drama was developed as Freesia. The producers switched to 햇빛 쏟아지다 (roughly, sunlight pours down), reportedly because dramas with flower names had been struggling.
Song Hye Kyo was the first of the three leads to be confirmed.
Joining this drama cost Ryu Seung Bum the role of Kim Jae Soo in KBS's More Beautiful Than a Flower, which aired in the same slot. Writer Noh Hee Kyung had shaped the part with him in mind, and Kim Heung Soo took it.
It is Lee Young Yoo's official debut. She plays Ye Kang, Yeon Woo's half-sister.
Detective Nam's full name is never spoken until the last episode, where a wedding invitation shows it as Nam Soon Ja.
For years the soundtrack could not be found on Korean music services; it only appeared there around 2018.
