Undercover High School

The school scenes were shot at Jungang High School (중앙고등학교), an autonomous private high school in Gyedong-dong, Jongno District, Seoul, standing just behind Changdeokgung Palace. Its stone buildings read more like an old university campus than a high school, which is why Korean dramas including Winter Sonata, Goblin and The School Nurse Files have filmed there before Undercover High School used it for the fictional Byeongmun High School.

The school uniforms were made and supplied by the uniform brand Gamseonggyobok, whose founder had previously designed the uniform for Hanilm Arts High School. The brand's own account of the commission says the design worked the ideas of camouflage and secrecy into the uniform itself, aiming for a clean look with something mysterious underneath it, a choice meant to carry the tension of a grown man passing as a student. This is the uniform maker's own description of the brief, not a statement from the director or cinematographer; no separate interview about the show's cinematography or set design has surfaced.

A deliberate pile-up of genres. At the production presentation at MBC's Sangam-dong building on 20 February 2025, the director Choi Jung-in described the show as 복합장르, a composite genre, and listed what was in it: horror, action, comedy, romance. She put it more bluntly a moment later, saying there was no genre that was not in it, and that the result should have appeal beyond a procedural or a thriller. Her summary of the tone was that the drama is light, and serious when it needs to be serious. Whether that holds for twelve episodes is the argument the show's reception turned on.

The joke on top and something else underneath. Seo Kang Joon said in February 2025 that what drew him to it was the range of registers, comic, action, human and crime, and that behind the cheerful comedy the work carried a message of its own. He described Jeong Hae-sung as a man who deals with his own pain himself rather than showing it to anyone, which is the thread that keeps a farcical premise from being only a farce.

Growth by proximity. The pre-broadcast framing put the point of the infiltration not in the gold but in the classroom: a man who hides what he is, builds ties with the students around him, and finds empathy and growth through doing so. Jin Ki-joo, asked why she took the part, said she had been worn out and was waiting for something a viewer could watch at ease without much agonising. That is a fair description of what the drama is offering.

The gold is a device, and the critics said so. Emperor Gojong's missing bars set the plot in motion and little more. Reviewing the finale, Maxmovie's Cho Hyun-ju argued that the treasure hunt sat alongside a ghost mystery, school corruption, an internal NIS conflict and the hero's own backstory without any of them being given room, and that the drama lost momentum to weak causality. The production never offered a historical reading of the premise, and this page does not invent one. The one detail that carries weight on its own is the name over the door: the fictional school is 병문고등학교, named for Seo Byeong-mun, the collaborator figure played by Kim Eui-sung.

What it was actually good at. OhmyStar's Kim Sang-hwa, writing two days after the premiere, put it as comedy plus espionage plus school drama in a relatively light register, and praised a lean, fast-moving story that carried stock character types better than it had any right to. The audience appeared to agree with him more than with the finale reviews: the drama held first place in Korean television drama buzz for six consecutive weeks while its ratings stayed in the sixes.

The Daesang, in his twelfth year

At the 2025 MBC Drama Awards on 30 December 2025, Seo Kang Joon took the Grand Prize for this role. It was the first Daesang of his career, twelve years after the web drama that gave him his debut. The programme also took Drama of the Year, Jin Ki-joo shared Top Excellence Actress in a miniseries with Kim Se-jeong and Kim Shin-rok took Best Supporting Actress, four wins on the night. Seo Kang Joon and Jin Ki-joo were also up for Best Couple, which went to Kang Tae-oh and Kim Se-jeong.

It lost the ratings and won the conversation

Nielsen Korea put the premiere at 5.6% nationwide on 21 February 2025 and the finale at 5.8% on 29 March, with a series average of 6.4% and a single high of 8.3% for episode four on 1 March. In the same Friday and Saturday slot, SBS's Treasure Island finished on 12.7%. And yet the drama held first place in Good Data Corporation's television drama buzz index for six consecutive weeks, never once giving up the top spot from its premiere. Few Korean dramas have produced a gap that wide between how many people watched and how much people talked.

His first work in three years

Seo Kang Joon enlisted on 23 November 2021 and served on active duty with the 1st Artillery Brigade as a driver, discharged on 22 May 2023. His casting here was confirmed on 6 March 2024 and the drama aired in February 2025, which is why Korean coverage described it throughout as a return after three years. It is his first released work after the service.

MBC's first drama on TVING

Domestic streaming went to TVING alongside Wavve. That is a strategic oddity worth noticing: Wavve is the platform the terrestrial broadcasters built together, and TVING is the competitor. Putting an MBC Friday-Saturday drama on both at once was a first, and the critic Kim Sang-hwa read it as the network testing a new direction rather than a one-off.

The school is named after the villain

병문고등학교, Byeongmun High School, does not exist. In the story it carries the name of Seo Byeong-mun, the collaborator figure played by Kim Eui-sung, which puts the building itself on the same historical fault line as the gold hidden inside it.

A sixty-two track album

The six OST parts listed on this page came out weekly during the run. The full album followed on 4 April 2025 and runs to sixty-two tracks: the six themes plus instrumentals, a jazz arrangement of "Love Is You" and fifty-four score cues.

Who made it

Choi Jung-in directed and Im Young-bin wrote, with music by Park Se-joon. The production companies were Neo Entertainment and Slingshot Studio. Neither the director nor the writer has a prior credit that any source this site could check attributes to them, so no earlier work is claimed for either here.

One ratings figure to distrust

A headline from 15 March 2025 gives a high of 8.6%. That cannot be an episode average, because the episode it refers to averaged 6.1%; it is almost certainly a per-minute peak. The series high as an episode average is 8.3%, from episode four.
