Synopsis
The WONDERfools K-drama is a Netflix superhero comedy set in Haeseong City in late 1999, when plenty of people believed the world would end once the calendar reached 2000. Eun Chae-ni (Park Eun Bin) has had a heart condition since childhood and has been told she will not live long. She lives with her grandmother Kim Jeon-bok (Kim Hae Sook), who owns a restaurant called Hearty House.
Chae-ni has no savings and no plan beyond the next day, and her idea for raising money is to have herself kidnapped. She recruits two neighbours for the job: Son Gyeong-hun (Choi Dae Hoon), a serial complainer at Haeseong City Hall, and Kang Ro-bin (Im Seong Jae), a timid kitchen worker at Hearty House. The fake abduction goes wrong when Chae-ni's heart gives out. In a panic the two men carry her body to a site where toxic chemicals have been leaking.
The chemicals bring her back and change all three of them. Chae-ni can now teleport, though rarely to where she meant to go. Gyeong-hun sticks to walls and ceilings whenever he tells a lie. Ro-bin gets enormous strength, but only after someone insults him. Nobody asked for these powers, and none of them can switch theirs on at will.
The fourth member of the team was hiding something long before the leak. Lee Un-jeong (Cha Eun Woo) is a reserved, rule-following civil servant who has kept his telekinesis secret. He becomes the unwilling coach of the other three. Among The WONDERfools characters he is the only one who already knows how to use a power.
The WONDERfools villain is Ha Won-do (Son Hyun Joo), a scientist who returns to Haeseong after twenty years in prison. The leaking chemicals trace back to his Wunderkinder Project, a secret programme of human experiments, and he has come back to find someone known only as the Child of Eternity. Three people who went through the project as children now work for him: Kim Pal-ho (Bae Na Ra), Seok Ju-ran (Jung Yi Seo), who sees Won-do as a father, and Seok Ho-ran (Choi Yoon Ji), who can make people see things that are not there. Another survivor, Gu Jun-mo (Cha Seo Won), has spent years trying to live a normal life.
Most of the jokes come from the distance between what these powers could do and what this group actually manages with them. The plot keeps moving toward New Year's Eve 1999, when the four have to fight Won-do's people in the open, and Chae-ni ends up at the centre of his plan.
Why it still gets watched
Most superhero shows begin with someone exceptional. The WONDERfools begins with people their own town has written off, and nearly every joke depends on that. Reviewers singled out Park Eun Bin's physical comedy, and the series reunites her with director Yoo In-sik four years after Extraordinary Attorney Woo, this time in a role that asks more of her body than of her lines.

Themes and messages
A panic without a fact-check. Yoo In-sik told TenAsia on 19 May 2026 that he chose 1999 because many people then believed the world would end in 2000, and because, with no smartphones, nobody could quickly check a rumour like that.
Heroes nobody would pick. Netflix sells the group as neighbourhood misfits. Their powers arrive by accident, work badly and depend on lying or being insulted, so the story is less about saving the world than about four people who can barely cooperate learning to do it.
Living on borrowed time. Park Eun Bin told Newsis (23 May 2026) that Chae-ni says whatever she wants because she does not expect to live long, and compared her to a car whose brakes have gone.
Thrill first, warmth after. At the 12 May press conference Yoo compared the series to an amusement-park ride and said he wanted viewers to feel warmth once the excitement was over.
Interesting facts
- It started as a Stan Lee project. Development began in November 2018 as The B-Team, built on a Stan Lee property about B-grade superheroes fighting the scientist who made them. In 2024 it became an original story; production company Nangmancrew said the change was agreed with the original author and that the title would change too.
- A first for the director. It is Yoo In-sik's first comedy and his first Netflix series. He told TenAsia he first read the script in 2020, before Extraordinary Attorney Woo was made.
- The Goonies and Indiana Jones. At the press conference on 12 May 2026 Yoo named those two films as the childhood favourites that made him want to make a superhero story.
- A bonus promise. Yoo said that if the series reached No. 1 worldwide he would make extra content with the cast.
- Harnesses, not just wires. Park Eun Bin said the teleport scenes kept her in a harness, which she found harder than wire work alone.
- One lead missing from the launch. Cha Eun Woo was doing his military service when the series came out and did not attend the Seoul press conference; Yoo said he had worked as hard as anyone on set.
- Shooting dates. Filming ran from October 2024 to June 2025.
