Yeo Yann Yann is a Malaysian-born, Singapore-based actress who won Best Supporting Actress at the 2013 Golden Horse Awards for Ilo Ilo and Best Leading Actress in 2019 for Wet Season.
Biography
Yeo Yann Yann was born on February 20, 1977, in Kukup, a town in the Pontian district of Johor, Malaysia. At 19, she left Malaysia to study at the Intercultural Theatre Institute in Singapore, where she was among its first graduating cohort, and made her stage debut in 1997 in Toy Factory Productions' Comedy of Mistakes.
She built a career across theatre, television and film, and gained wider attention for the 2006 film Singapore Dreaming, in which she played Mei. In 2013, she starred as the mother in Anthony Chen's Ilo Ilo, a role that won her Best Supporting Actress at the 50th Golden Horse Awards; the film received a 15-minute standing ovation at its Cannes premiere.
Yeo reunited with Chen for Wet Season (2018), which won her Best Leading Actress at the 56th Golden Horse Awards in 2019, along with a Best Actress award at the Vladivostok Film Festival. Her television work includes The Right Frequency (1998), The Iron Lady (2009) and Invisible Stories (2020). More recently, she appeared as Christine Wang in the Disney+ series American Born Chinese (2023) and in the 2025 Netflix film Havoc alongside Tom Hardy.
She married Hong Kong action choreographer Ma Yuk-sing in 2012, and the couple have a daughter born the same year.
