Synopsis
"Café Minamdang" follows Nam Han-joon, a former criminal profiler who now runs the Minamdang café as a fake shaman, using cold-reading tricks and elaborate cons to solve his clients' personal problems for a fee. His sister Nam Hye-joon and a small crew of former convicts help him stage the rituals. Detective Han Jae-hee, newly transferred into the violent crimes unit, is drawn into his orbit when their cases start to overlap.
The 18-episode KBS2 series aired Mondays and Tuesdays from June 27 to August 23, 2022. Each episode pairs a client's fortune-telling request with a thread of a larger criminal investigation, gradually tying Han-joon's shaman con to a string of unsolved cases Jae-hee's team is chasing. Much of the story plays out around Minamdang's real Hongdae café setting and the surrounding Mapo-gu streets of Seoul.
Han-joon's shaman act hides the guilt and instincts left over from his profiling career, and he uses both to read suspects long before the police do. Jae-hee starts out suspicious of his methods and his refusal to work by the book, but repeated close calls in the field push the two into an uneasy partnership that slowly turns personal. The mismatched pair's clashing approaches to the same cases drive most of the season's tension and its running jokes.
The series was recognized at the 2022 KBS Drama Awards, where Seo In-guk and Oh Yeon-seo won Best Couple, Kang Mi-na won Best New Actress, and Seo In-guk was nominated for Best Actor. Its mix of mystery, comedy, and shamanic ritual drew enough attention that the Hongdae café used for filming became a stop for visiting fans.
