Synopsis
Goong S imagines Korea as a constitutional monarchy still ruled by an empress in the 2000s. Hwa-in (Myung Se-bin), already in her thirties, is unmarried and without an heir, so the royal household begins searching her extended family for a Crown Prince. That search leads to Lee Hoo (Se7en), a Chinese restaurant delivery rider in Incheon who has no idea he carries royal blood, since his mother was expelled from the palace before he was born. He is brought inside the palace walls to be trained as a candidate for the throne.
Lee Hoo's arrival unsettles Lee Joon (Kang Doo), a cousin raised from childhood to expect the crown and already engaged to the prime minister's daughter, Shin Sae-ryung (Park Shin-hye). The three compete through a series of royal trials meant to test which of them deserves the title of Crown Prince. Lee Hoo leans on Yang Soon-ae (Heo Yi-jae), the palace maid who was his childhood friend and still calls him by his old name, Kang Hoo; their bond grows into romance even as Lee Joon starts to fall for her and Sae-ryung's feelings drift toward Lee Hoo instead.
Goong S aired on MBC from 10 January to 15 March 2007 across 20 episodes, directed by Hwang In-roe for production company Group Eight. The premiere drew a 15.3 percent nationwide rating; by the finale that figure had fallen to 4.6 percent. The drama found a longer life abroad, airing later in Turkey, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United States.
