Synopsis
The Perfect Lie is an MBC psychological thriller that premieres on 30 October 2026 in the network's Friday and Saturday 9:50 pm slot. MBC describes it as the story of a man and a woman who give completely opposite accounts of the same memory and clash while chasing the truth. Its promotional line is simple: one of the two is lying.
Min Joon-ho (Yoo Yeon Seok) is a cardiac surgeon and a single father whom people trust. Kang Ji-sun (Seo Hyun Jin) is a librarian at an elementary school who, in the words of the drama's promotion, goes through unexpected emotional changes. What happened between them is the question the series is built on.
The first teaser, released on 11 September 2026, starts with what looks like a perfect first date and cuts to a police interrogation room, where the accusations begin. Its closing line puts it plainly: out of the two of you, the person who lied is you.
The supporting characters widen the circle. Lee Hwa-young (Ok Ja Yeon) is a detective in a juvenile crimes unit, and her husband Park Seok-gu (Im Seong Jae) is a UDT naval special forces officer. Kang Ji-eun (Kim Ji Hyun), Ji-sun's older sister, is an anesthesiologist, and Lee Chun Hee plays her husband Kim Hyung-soo.
Jo Young-min directs from an original script by Baek Jae-young. The two leads last worked together on Dr. Romantic, and the cast held its script reading on 22 September 2026.
The Perfect Lie cast
Themes and messages
Two versions of one night. MBC built the series on a single memory that the two leads remember in opposite ways, so the viewer has to decide whom to believe.
Trust as a disguise. The man at the centre is a respected surgeon and a devoted father, the kind of person people take at his word, which is exactly what the premise puts on trial.
Romance turned interrogation. The first teaser moves from a perfect first date straight into a police interview room, setting up the shift from love story to accusation.
