Synopsis

Set in a fictionalized Joseon-era royal court, Under the Queen's Umbrella follows Queen Im Hwa-ryung (Kim Hye-soo), a former court lady who married into the royal family and now spends far more energy refereeing her five unruly sons than performing the graceful duties expected of a queen. Loud, foul-mouthed, and willing to get physically involved in palace brawls to protect her children, Hwa-ryung is an openly unconventional royal figure in a court built on rigid decorum.

The story turns serious as the question of succession moves to the center of palace politics. The crown prince's grip on his position weakens under pressure from ambitious in-law families and rival court factions, while Hwa-ryung's other sons each carry their own burdens, rivalries, and secrets. As plots, forced marriages, and quiet threats close in around her children, Hwa-ryung is pulled into the very intrigue she has spent years trying to shield them from.

Beneath its historical setting, the drama doubles as a pointed, often darkly comic allegory for modern parenting under relentless academic and social pressure, with Hwa-ryung's frantic efforts to keep her sons alive and in favor echoing the anxieties of present-day "education mothers." The series balances that satire with genuine palace-intrigue stakes, following Hwa-ryung as she fights, schemes, and improvises her way through a court that was never built to accommodate a mother like her.
