ASTRO

ASTRO members, then and now

Fantagio introduced the six members on its social media on 14 August 2015. Jinjin was named leader and rapper, with drums and beatbox as extra skills. MJ, the oldest, was listed as main vocalist and the one who keeps the mood up. Moonbin came in as the dancer, Rocky as a dancer who had been dancing since the age of five and could also rap and sing, and Yoon San-ha, born in 2000, as the youngest and a vocalist. Cha Eun Woo was introduced by his looks rather than a part.

Three of them have their own profile here: MJ, Cha Eun Woo and Moon Bin. MJ was the first to enlist, on 9 May 2022, and was discharged on 8 November 2023. Cha Eun Woo went in on 28 July 2025 and serves in the army band, with discharge set for 27 January 2027. Fantagio said in June 2025 that Jinjin had been found unfit for military duty on health grounds.

How ASTRO debuted

The members were trainees in iTeen, Fantagio’s rookie programme. Before the debut they acted in the 2015 web drama To Be Continued, and MBC every1 aired their reality show ASTRO OK! Ready from 21 January to 18 February 2016. Spring Up then went to No. 4 on the Gaon album chart.

The first music show win took almost three years. It came on 29 January 2019, when All Night topped SBS MTV’s The Show.

ASTRO albums in order

The three studio albums are All Light, All Yours and Drive to the Starry Road. The 2016 EPs followed the seasons, Spring Up, Summer Vibes and Autumn Story, and Winter Dream closed the cycle in February 2017 as a single album. The Dream Part.01 and Part.02 EPs came the same year, then Rise Up, Blue Flame, Gateway and Switch On.

All Yours is the best seller, with 360,911 copies in Korea. Drive to the Starry Road was made while MJ was in the army, so the group promoted it as five. The table on this page lists every release with its date and lead song.

What happened to Moonbin

Moonbin died on 19 April 2023, and the group has performed as four since. On the second anniversary, 19 April 2025, his friends released the tribute song Moon. More than 30 artists took part, among them the four members, Rocky, and his sister Moon Sua of Billlie. MJ, Jinjin, Cha Eun Woo, Yoon San-ha and Rocky wrote the lyrics together. Cha Eun Woo’s songs and words about him are collected in this piece on their friendship.

Why Rocky left ASTRO

On 30 December 2022 Jinjin, Cha Eun Woo, Moonbin and Yoon San-ha renewed their contracts. Fantagio said MJ’s renewal would wait until his discharge and that talks with Rocky were still going on. Those talks ended without a deal, and Rocky left the agency and the group on 28 February 2023. MJ signed again on 18 December 2024.

ASTRO sub-units

Moonbin & Sanha debuted on 14 September 2020 with the EP In-Out and the single Bad Idea. Eight days later, on 22 September, they won on The Show. Jinjin & Rocky followed on 17 January 2022 with the EP Restore and the single Just Breath.

The third unit, Zoonizini, pairs MJ and Jinjin. Its six-track EP Dice came out on 13 August 2025 with Some Things Never Change as the title track, and Jinjin worked on five of the six songs. MJ said they wanted a name people outside the fandom would remember; the pair took cartoon duos such as Pat & Mat and Tom & Jerry as the model.

Is the ASTRO kpop group still active?

Yes. The group marks each debut anniversary with a release: One & Only in 2020, Circles in 2024 and Twilight in 2025, which Jinjin produced. The 4th ASTROAD [Stargraphy] filled Inspire Arena in Incheon on 7 and 8 June 2025, ASTRO’s first concert in three years, and moved to Fukuoka on 28 and 29 June. Rocky came back for the songs he had recorded with the group, and the poster carried Moonbin’s name next to the others.

AROHA and the ASTRO light stick

The fan club name was revealed at the debut showcase on 28 January 2016. Fantagio announced the official colours on 28 February 2017. The plum-violet light stick was shown on 3 July 2017; it syncs wirelessly at concerts, and with its cradle and case it works as a lamp that throws stars across a room.
