Synopsis
High Kick Through the Roof follows two sisters, twenty-two-year-old Se-kyung and nine-year-old Shin-ae, who have spent their whole lives with their father in a remote village in the Taebaek Mountains, without even electricity. After a chain of chaotic events separates them from their father, the sisters end up alone in Seoul, and the city overwhelms them: high-rises, subways, department stores and cell phones are things Shin-ae has never seen before, while Se-kyung is too frightened to manage on her own.
The sisters eventually find work as live-in maids in the sprawling, three-generation household of Lee Soon-jae, the 72-year-old president of a small food company in Seongbuk-dong. Soon-jae is falling in love for the first time in years just as his life is winding down, his granddaughter Hae-ri has a habit of shrieking over her own constipation every morning, and nearly every adult under his roof, from his meek son-in-law Bo-seog to his short-tempered daughter Hyeon-gyeong, carries some quirky flaw of their own.
Built around the family's daily clashes and the two maids folded into their routines, the series plays out as a broad slice-of-life sitcom: petty rivalries between in-laws, Soon-jae's late-life courtship of Ja-ok, and a household of misfits who bicker their way toward something like affection. Alongside the comedy, Se-kyung and Shin-ae slowly settle into Seoul and grow up, with Se-kyung drawn into an on-and-off romance with the family's young doctor, Ji-hoon.
Airing on MBC on weekday evenings from September 2009 to March 2010, the show ran for 126 episodes and closes with the sisters leaving Korea to rejoin their father, ending the family's year together on the terms the show set from its first episode.
