Biography
Hwang Jung Eum, born on January 25, 1985, in Seoul, South Korea, began her career as a singer. She debuted as lead vocalist of the K-pop girl group Sugar in 2002 but left the group in 2004 to pursue acting. She was a recurring guest on the variety show Love Letter and, in 2009, appeared with then-boyfriend Kim Yong-jun on We Got Married Season 2 as a real-life couple.
Her breakout came the same year in the sitcom High Kick Through the Roof, and she took her first lead role in Listen to My Heart (2011), followed by Full House Take 2 (2012) and the crime melodrama Secret Love (2013), which won her the Top Excellence Award at the 2013 KBS Drama Awards.
In 2015, Hwang starred opposite Ji Sung in Kill Me, Heal Me, playing a woman helping a man with dissociative identity disorder, then reunited with co-stars Park Seo-joon and Go Joon-hee for She Was Pretty. Both dramas won her honors at the 2015 MBC Drama Awards, including the PD Award. She went on to lead The Undateables (2018), the fantasy series Mystic Pop-up Bar (2020) and the SBS crime drama The Escape of the Seven (2023–2024).
Hwang married businessman and former professional golfer Lee Young-don in February 2016; they had two sons, born in August 2017 and March 2022. She filed for divorce in September 2020, reconciled with her husband in July 2021, then filed again in February 2024, and the divorce was finalized in May 2025. She signed with Y.ONE Entertainment in July 2023 after previously being represented by C-JeS Entertainment.
