Cunning Single Lady

No filming location for this drama has ever been published. Korean and English Wikipedia, namu.wiki, AsianWiki, MyDramaList and HanCinema all carry location sections or notes for other 2014 MBC productions and none of them carries one for this. Korean-language location searches return nothing either. Rather than fill the gap with plausible Seoul landmarks, this record says what the sources say: unknown.

One production address is documented. The cast read the script together in mid-January 2014 at the MBC Dream Center in Ilsan, which is where MBC held most of its table reads at the time. That is a rehearsal venue, not a shooting location, and it is listed here as the single verified physical address connected to the production.

No wardrobe or set design statement for Cunning Single Lady has surfaced in Korean coverage, and this record does not guess at one.

Korean entertainment press did size up the pairing of directors Go Dong-sun and Jung Dae-yoon before the premiere. eToday's preview credited Go Dong-sun with a track record of delicate, emotionally attentive directing, and forecast that the two of them together would give the series a colorful, fresh visual sensibility built around its strongly individual characters. That is a press prediction written ahead of broadcast, not a statement from the director or a review of the finished episodes, and it is reported here as such.

Money is a reason, and the show says so. Most romantic comedies of this period asked their heroine to be poor and blameless. Ae-ra is neither. She married for security the first time and she is chasing security again, and the script lets her hold that position for sixteen episodes without a scene where she renounces it. What changes is not her motive but her honesty about it.

Silence costs more than the thing you are hiding. The miscarriage is the hinge. Ae-ra kept it from Jung-woo because telling him felt like handing him a wound to use, and the marriage died of that decision rather than of the loss itself. Every later obstacle in the plot is a smaller version of the same mistake: someone deciding that the kind thing is to say nothing.

The second marriage has to be a different marriage. The drama is not interested in restoring what the couple had. It makes both of them argue their way to terms they never set the first time, which is why the reconciliation lands in the last two episodes rather than the last ten minutes.

Being the decent one is not the same as winning. Gook Seung-hyun wants nothing from Ae-ra, and the drama does not reward him for it. He is the only person in the story with clean motives and he ends up outside the couple, which is a harder note than the genre usually plays.

• The script was a competition entry. Lee Ha-na and Choi Soo-young's screenplay took an encouragement prize in the serial section of MBC's 2012 script contest before the network commissioned it.
• Seo Kang Joon played older than he was. Gook Seung-hyun is 27; Seo was 22 by the Korean count the press used at the time, 20 by international reckoning. He told OBS that a lot of the part matched him anyway, describing himself as bright and prone to joking among friends, and as someone who has to say what he thinks.
• He had worked with Joo Sang Wook before. Both were on KBS2's Good Doctor the previous year, and Seo said in the same OBS interview that Joo's presence carried over as an encouraging one.
• He named his models in that interview: Ha Jung-woo and Yoo Ah-in, singling out Yoo's work in Secret Love Affair, and said he wanted to become an actor audiences could trust.
• The in-story messaging app was real. "Dontalk", which characters use on screen, existed on Google Play, and tie-in promotions ran alongside the broadcast. The production also carried sponsorship from the paprika growers' association.
• Lee Min Jung's wardrobe sold out. Her baseball jacket and wave-print skirt generated enough "where is it from" demand that trade press covered her as a 완판녀, a star whose outfits clear the shelves.
• National news moved the finale. Episode 14 aired on 10 April 2014; episodes 15 and 16 did not arrive until 23 and 24 April, because MBC gave the slot over to coverage of the Sewol ferry disaster. The two-week hole is visible in the ratings table below.
• It handed the slot on. The drama took MBC's Wednesday-Thursday 21:55 hour from Miss Korea and passed it to A New Leaf, which premiered on 30 April 2014.

The screenplay is original work. It is not drawn from a novel or a webtoon.

It has been remade once, in Turkey. Aşk Mantık İntikam, sold internationally as Love, Reason, Get Even, ran on Fox from 18 June 2021 to 22 April 2022, produced by No:9 Productions. Burcu Özberk plays the Na Ae-ra part as Esra Erten and İlhan Şen plays the Cha Jung-woo part as Ozan Korfalı.

The Turkish version runs 42 episodes against the Korean 16. That is the usual arithmetic when a Korean miniseries is rebuilt for a Turkish weekly slot, where episodes run well past two hours: the same central plot is spread across roughly two and a half times the screen time, and the family subplots carry the extra weight.

No Chinese, Japanese, Filipino or American remake is documented, and there is no second Korean season.
