Synopsis
The Return of Superman (슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다) is a KBS2 reality show that films celebrity fathers looking after their children for 48 hours while their wives are away. It began as a three-night Chuseok pilot on 19 to 21 September 2013 with Lee Hwi-jae, Choo Sung-hoon and Jang Hyun-sung, joined the Sunday block Happy Sunday as a regular segment on 3 November 2013, and had reached episode 637 by 30 September 2026.
The wives are seen leaving at the start and coming home at the end. In between, the fathers work through a list of tasks their wives wrote for them or take the children somewhere new, while cameras and crew stay out of sight in tents and play houses set up inside the family's own home. Friends of the fathers drop in, and short interviews with the parents explain what the footage has just shown.
Tablo with his daughter Haru, Choo Sung-hoon with Sarang, and Lee Hwi-jae with the twins Seo-eon and Seo-jun made up the first line-up. Song Il-gook's triplets Dae-han, Min-guk and Man-se arrived in July 2014, and footballer Lee Dong-gook came in July 2015 with five children, among them his son Si-an, known on the show as Dae-bak. Park Joo-ho's family, on air from 2018 to March 2024 with a break in 2020, hold the record for the longest stay. Sayuri Fujita and her son Zen became the first mother in the regular cast in May 2021, and other mothers have since appeared in a segment called Supermom Is Back.
The show left Happy Sunday for a slot of its own on 28 April 2019. It moved to Friday nights on 22 April 2022, to Tuesdays in May 2023, back to Sunday in April 2024, and to Wednesday at 8:30 pm on 6 November 2024, where it still airs. From episode 520 on 7 April 2024 the voice-over gave way to a studio in which a host watches the week's footage with the fathers featured in it. So Yoo-jin hosted first, then Choi Ji-woo and Ahn Young-mi, joined by Park Soo-hong in October 2024, and since episode 598 on 26 November 2025 the hosts are Kim Jong-min and Ralral.
In 2026 the regular families are fencer Kim Jun-ho with his sons Eun-woo and Jung-woo, actor Shim Hyung-tak with his son Haru, Son Min-soo, singer KCM and YouTuber Kwak Tube, with Ralral and Han Da-gam in the mothers' segment. The highest per-minute figure in the show's history, 31.2%, came on 11 October 2015 in episode 99, during a football match between Min-guk and Dae-bak after Lee Dong-gook had coached the triplets. Seo Kang Joon's visit belongs to the Lee Dong-gook years: in the Christmas episode of 25 December 2016 he spent the day with Seol-ah, Su-ah and Dae-bak.
Why it still gets watched
Many viewers come back for children they first saw as babies. The show's own YouTube channel, opened in 2021, mixes clips of earlier families with footage that never made it to air, and in July 2025 it became the first KBS programme channel to pass one million subscribers. Some former cast children still turn up elsewhere: Choo Sarang and Lee Dong-gook's daughter Jae-si were regulars together on tvN STORY's 이젠 날 따라와 in 2022.

Themes and messages
Filming follows the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, according to Korean Wikipedia: parents and children are briefed and agree before shooting, and the crew works from tents and screens so the children notice the cameras less. Families have also signed on with child-welfare bodies. Sam Hammington's family made an agreement with Good Neighbors on children's rights in November 2020, and Park Joo-ho became an ambassador for the National Center for the Rights of the Child in June 2024.
Interesting facts
- Songs for each child. Danal Entertainment wrote theme songs for individual children, such as the triplets' song and Dae-bak's song, and Lee Hwi-jae recorded 2016 Say Goodbye, a remake of his debut single 변명, with his twins on backing vocals. No new songs were made after 2016.
- The unaired files. In 2015 ten episodes of unbroadcast footage, titled 미공개 X-파일, came out one a month on IPTV video-on-demand, and KBS2 aired them over three days at Seollal 2016.
- A book. The production team published a companion book, 슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다, on 15 January 2015 (Sangsang School, ISBN 8993702748), and a Chinese edition followed the same year.
Remakes and other versions
KBS sold the format to a Chinese partner on 24 April 2014, and the Chinese version aired on Zhejiang Television under a title meaning Dad Is Back. On 6 October 2015 KBS signed a format licence with the American producer Chicken Soup for the Soul Productions.
