Synopsis
We Got Married (우리 결혼했어요) is an MBC reality show that paired celebrities as virtual newlyweds and filmed them carrying out missions together. It ran from 16 March 2008 to 13 May 2017 in four seasons, 442 broadcasts in TMDB's count, and Seo Kang Joon appears as a guest in three of them.
The idea was tested in a Lunar New Year pilot on 6 February 2008, in which four arranged couples had to cook dinner on a fixed budget. From March 2008 the show ran on Sundays inside Sunday Sunday Night. Each week the producers handed the couples a task such as a housewarming, a holiday or a round of housework, and the episodes mixed that footage with private interviews and a studio panel watching along. On 15 August 2009 it left the Sunday block and moved to its own Saturday slot at 5 pm.
Season 1 (March 2008 to May 2009) brought the first pairs, among them Alex and Shin Ae, Crown J and Seo In-young, Andy and Solbi, and Kim Hyun-joong and Hwangbo. Season 2 opened in May 2009 with a cut-down format, one couple and 60 minutes, built around Kim Yong-jun and Hwang Jung-eum; after weak ratings the old multi-couple format came back with Park Jae-jung and Uee on 2 August 2009, and the season went on to Jo Kwon and Gain, Jung Yong-hwa and Seohyun, and Nichkhun and Victoria. Season 3 began on 9 April 2011, the first in HD, with Lee Jang-woo and Eunjung, Kim Won-jun and Park So-hyun, and later Leeteuk and Kang So-ra.
Season 4 was by far the longest, 241 episodes from September 2012. Its couples included Taemin and Son Na-eun, Song Jae-rim and Kim So-eun, Yook Sung-jae and Joy, Eric Nam and Solar, and Gong Myung and Jung Hye-sung. The Korea Herald reported on 17 April 2017 that ratings had been slipping and that MBC described the ending as a pause before a new season. The last regular episode aired on 6 May 2017, and a final special on 13 May closed the marriage of Choi Min-yong and Jang Do-yeon.
Episode counts differ between sources because MBC restarted its numbering at 1 when the show moved to Saturdays and reached 373 by May 2017, the figure Wikipedia gives. TMDB lists every broadcast, 442 in all. The episode list on this page numbers them 1 to 442 in broadcast order, so MBC's episode 246 appears here as number 315.
Seo Kang Joon came on with his 5urprise bandmates Yoo Il and Kang Tae-oh. On 15 November 2014, MBC episode 246, the three met Song Jae-rim as Kim So-eun's close younger friends, and Seo Kang Joon told him that So-eun had been his partner in the first kiss scene of his first acting job. On 4 and 11 February 2017, MBC episodes 359 and 360, they returned for bandmate Gong Myung, first bringing flowers and gifts to meet Jung Hye-sung and then helping him stage a proposal in Sinchon.
Why it still gets watched
People still look the show up one couple at a time: search suggestions are full of pairings such as Taemin and Naeun, Jonghyun and Yura, Sungjae and Joy, or Gong Myung and Hye-sung. Because every couple had its own run of weeks, the dated list below makes it possible to follow a single marriage from first meeting to farewell without the rest. MBC still lists the Saturday-era episodes, from 15 August 2009 to 13 May 2017, on its iMBC VOD page.

Themes and messages
MBC set the show up as a light look at the rules of modern marriage through invented couples, and its own programme note speaks of looking for answers to common worries about dating and marriage through a virtual married life. Missions such as meeting the in-laws, splitting housework or planning a wedding were the tools for that. Criticism followed the same lines: Korean Wikipedia records complaints that the situations were staged by people who were not real couples, and a January 2009 Asia Economy article asked whether the show had become a way to promote newcomers.
Interesting facts
- A strong pilot. The Lunar New Year special of 6 February 2008 drew a 14.3% rating in AGB Nielsen's figures, six weeks before the first regular episode.
- Footage months old. An MBC labour strike in spring 2010 left a backlog, so some Jo Kwon and Gain and Yong-hwa and Seohyun episodes aired months after they were filmed instead of the usual one or two weeks.
- A real couple. Jung-in and Jo Jung-chi, together for 11 years in real life, joined as a couple on 9 March 2013.
- A one-off pair. For Chuseok 2016 the panel members Yang Se-chan and Park Na-rae formed a couple for a single rally episode, broadcast on 10 September 2016.
Remakes and other versions
MBC made a Global Edition that paired Korean idols with Japanese and Taiwanese partners, in two seasons broadcast in 2013 and 2014. A Chinese version was made for the 20th anniversary of Korea-China diplomatic ties and aired in February 2012, and a licensed remake for China, We Are In Love, started on 19 April 2015 with dating couples instead of married ones. The spin-off Pit-a-Pat Shake moved the idea from marriage to dating.
